Who hasn’t enjoyed a hot toddy? Let me tell you my first experience with them was a memory I will never forget but first….

What is a Hot Toddy?

Hot Toddy

A classic Hot Toddy is made with whiskey, honey, lemon juice and hot water. It is a warm winter drink that soothes the soul. It’s really refreshing and not heavy. A perfect winters night cap. The Hot Toddy I make is a little different than the traditional Hot Toddy but still delicious and gets the same results.

The Hot Toddy originated in India, which was controlled by Britain in the 1600s. They had a word called “Taddy” which was translated into a drink with fermented palm. The drink has changed since then, but the flavor is still engrossed with a sort of sugar, hot water, lemon and an alcohol.

My First Time

Oh man, if I could relive this day, I probably would have started it out with a hot toddy. I say that but it really wasn’t that bad. I was just COLD, so COLD by the end of the night.

My then fiancé and I were on a camping trip with my best friend and her fiancé. We went to the coast which is the most beautiful place to be. I did not grow up camping, I got to go occasionally with my aunt and grandma but that was about it.

We had an amazing day on the beach with a lemon drop or two and the sun was shining so bright. Then, the weather turned and it was windy. With wind always comes cold. We did everything to try and warm up but my best friend and I just couldn’t. We were inside a CVS when she said we need some Hot Toddy’s by the campfire.

I had never had them so I let her show me and man, I have them every winter now when it gets cold! My husband and I have about two nights per winter on a weekend when we light a fire and put the kids to bed… then have a couple hot toddy’s and have a date night in. No TV, just the fire and us. It’s become something I look forward to in the cold months. We even move the couch to be right in front facing the fire. It’s so special.

Benefits of the Hot Toddy

Vitamin C: Lemon has a ton of vitamin C (Make sure to get organic for the most benefits.) This can help your immune system kick the cold.

Honey: Honey is antimicrobial and anti inflammatory, both things you want when fighting a cold.

Soothing: Its soothing to your throat and relieves congestion when sick.

Brandy: (*Note, this is when in moderation) Can help help in a similar way as wine does as it has similar antioxidants. It can help fight free radicals.
