This is the sugar cookie recipe I have always used with my grandma. I will never forget waiting til it was time to make these cookies. As you can see in photos below, they are plain with no colorings. My grandma would divide the dough into two different bowls and color one section green and one section red. That was always a fun addition and maybe we will do that next year!

Making Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies Recipe

This cookie recipe is easy to make! But be prepared…you do have to chill it. This part is very important so please do not skip it. This recipe makes about 5 dozen cookies, so you are going to want multiple baking sheets, and extra large ones at that! That’s what’s so nice about this recipe, you make so many with one batch. By the time the kids are done decorating them all you can have the kitchen cleaned! This is only one of the many things I like to make at Christmas time.

The holidays get busy so keep in mind, you can make this recipe ahead of time! I will bake these a week in advanced and put them in the freezer. That way when it’s time to decorate, there’s much less of a mess and you can even enjoy helping the kids without thinking about the clean up afterwords. I typically lay down a dollar store table cloth and let the kids get wild. It’s more fun for them that way.
