Taco night is one of those dinners that never really goes out of style. Keeping a simple homemade taco seasoning mix in the pantry means dinner is halfway done before you even start. You can pull this seasoning out for an easy Taco Tuesday or Taco Thursday 😏.

I love a good theme night for dinner. Another one we have been doing frequently in our house is Surf n’ Turf. Even the kids love it! But one of their favorites is definitely taco night.

FAQs

How long does homemade taco seasoning last?

When stored in an airtight jar in a cool, dry pantry, homemade taco seasoning will stay fresh for about 6 months. For the best flavor, keep it away from heat and humidity and give the jar a quick shake before using

Can I make it spicy?

Yes. To increase heat, add:

¼–½ teaspoon cayenne pepper Crushed red pepper flakes Or extra chili powder

Start small and adjust to your preference

Does it contain cornstarch?

No, unless you choose to add it.

Many store-bought packets include cornstarch as a thickener. This homemade version skips fillers and relies on simmering to thicken naturally. If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can stir in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch while cooking.

Can I use it for chicken?

Absolutely. This seasoning works well with:

Ground turkey Shredded chicken Chicken thighs Pork Roasted vegetables

It’s also great sprinkled over roasted potatoes or mixed into rice.

Why does my taco meat taste bland?

Common causes include:

Not using enough seasoning Not adding enough salt Not simmering long enough Too much added water

Taste and adjust before serving.

Is this taco seasoning healthier than store-bought?

This version uses simple pantry ingredients and avoids unnecessary fillers or additives. It allows you to control the salt level and spice blend while keeping your pantry stocked with familiar ingredients.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

(Perfect for Keeping in the Pantry)

Ingredients (Single Batch – About 3 Tablespoons)

1 tablespoon chili powder 1½ teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon fine sea salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Optional for heat:

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Whisk together until evenly combined.

How to Use

For 1 pound ground beef (or turkey):

Brown meat and drain excess grease. Stir in 2–3 tablespoons taco seasoning. Add ½–¾ cup water. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.

Taste and adjust salt if needed.

Bulk Pantry Version (Quart Jar Size)

If you want to stock your pantry, multiply the single batch by 8–10.

Example bulk mix (makes about 1½ cups):

½ cup chili powder 3 tablespoons cumin 2½ tablespoons paprika 2½ tablespoons garlic powder 2½ tablespoons onion powder 1 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon salt 1½ teaspoons black pepper 1–2 teaspoons cayenne (optional)

Store in an airtight jar for up to 6 months.

Optional Thickener (If You Want “Packet-Style” Texture)

If you want it closer to store-bought taco packets:

Add 1–2 tablespoons cornstarch to the bulk mix.

That helps create thicker taco meat when simmered.
