I use this mix constantly in one of my favorite dips. I could not find a “clean” version in stores OR online! So I finally decided to make my own version at home — and honestly, I like it better. There was a lot of extra ingredients I just wanted to avoid. So naturally I started working on making my own from scratch. This recipe is especially good in my Spinach Dip.

How I Use It (Lead Into Your Dip)

My Favorite Way to Use This Mix

Spinach dip can pretty much be found at every party. You can easily buy it at the grocery store. However, I’ve found they are plain and lack flavor. This is where my spinach dip really shines. The leek soup mix is what gives it that over-the-top I can’t stop eating it flavor.

It makes it —

  • Creamy
  • Savory
  • Perfect for gatherings
  • Easy to keep ingredients on hand

Storage Tips

  • Store in airtight jar
  • Keep in pantry
  • Label with date
  • Avoid humidity

FAQ Section Can I use fresh leeks instead of dried?

Yes, but fresh leeks will change the texture and shelf life of the mix. This homemade leek soup mix is designed to be a dry pantry blend, which means it stores well and can be measured like a packet substitute. If you want to use fresh leeks, sauté them first to soften and bring out their sweetness, then add them directly to your soup or dip recipe. Fresh leeks are great for immediate use, but they won’t work in a make-ahead dry mix because of moisture.

❓ How long does homemade leek soup mix last?

When stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry, this dry leek soup mix will last 6–12 months. The flavor is best within the first 6 months, especially if you’re using dried herbs like parsley. To extend freshness, keep the jar away from heat, light, and humidity. If the mix loses aroma or the herbs fade in color, it’s time to refresh it.

❓ Is this homemade leek soup mix gluten-free?

Yes, it can be gluten-free depending on your ingredients. Most dried leeks, onion powder, garlic powder, and cornstarch are naturally gluten-free, but always check labels to be sure. If you’re sensitive to gluten, verify that your cornstarch and any bouillon or nutritional yeast you use are certified gluten-free. Making your own mix is actually a great way to avoid hidden gluten sometimes found in store-bought soup packets.

❓ Can I make this dairy-free?

The dry mix itself is dairy-free. If you’re using it to make creamy leek dip, simply swap the sour cream for a dairy-free alternative like plain coconut yogurt or a dairy-free sour cream substitute. For soup, you can use unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, or full-fat coconut milk for a creamy texture without dairy.

❓ What can I use instead of nutritional yeast?

If you don’t have nutritional yeast, you can leave it out or substitute a small amount of chicken bouillon powder for extra savory depth. Nutritional yeast adds a subtle umami flavor similar to what you find in packaged leek soup mixes, but the recipe will still work without it. A pinch of celery seed can also help boost the savory flavor.

❓ Can I use this mix for more than just dip?

Absolutely. This homemade leek soup mix works beautifully in creamy soups, slow cooker chicken dishes, casseroles, and even as a seasoning for roasted potatoes. Anywhere you would normally use a store-bought leek soup packet, you can substitute about 3 tablespoons of this mix. It’s a versatile pantry staple that adds savory, onion-forward flavor to simple meals.

❓ How much homemade mix equals one packet?

About 3 tablespoons of this homemade leek soup mix equals one standard store-bought packet. If you’re doubling or tripling a recipe, simply measure accordingly. Keeping this conversion in the post makes it easy for readers to swap it into their favorite recipes.

This mix is just one of many I make at home now. I keep my pantry stocked, or whip up a single recipe really quick with less ingredient recipes.
