Benefits of the Sauna

In the new year I decided to start utilizing the benefits of the Sauna. It’s something I have always wanted to get into but have hesitated.

What is a Sauna?

A sauna is a small wood lined room heated to 150 to 175 degrees fahrenheit typically, but you know the internet, there is always going to be a debate on what is “right.” Traditionally and in my gym these are heated with a furnace and hot rocks. I know that now there are electric versions for your home however if I ever have one I will go traditional to stay away from any extra EMFs as possible.

Saunas can be quite expensive, however I use the one at the gym that I go to. It is one of the benefits of the membership and does not cost extra. Maybe one day I will have one at my house!

History of the Sauna

The Sauna is said to be invented by the Finnish over 2,000 years ago. Even though it is currently trending, they have been around for a long, long time. It was brought to America by the Finns around 1638. So, the west is really just beginning its journey with the sauna.

Its intense.

I had two worries when starting to use the benefits of the sauna; the heat and the small confined space. I’m claustrophobic and heat makes it worse if you are in a small space. I told myself I was going to face my fear and go into that tiny room with other people and sweat myself silly.

Boy, do you sweat. My first experience with the sauna I only lasted 8 minutes. I was dehydrated (I do not recommend trying this dehydrated!) and I had not eaten yet that day. Not a good combo. However I was determined to get good at going to the sauna.

The next couple times were much better. I came hydrated and prepared. Once I finish working out I change into my swim suit and go straight in. I set a timer on my phone for 20 minutes now. I worked my way up to this, but it only took a 2 months of going twice a week to get there physically and mentally.

What I have noticed.

I get excited for it now. I know that I am helping my body heal and release toxins. Challenging my body and mind is something I enjoy. This just seemed like the next natural path in my wellness journey. My husband is the one who got me into this so I have him to thank!

I’ve seen big improvements in both sleep and energy. When I get out of the sauna I know I have done something good for my body. However, I have one more step before I head out the door. If you’re interested in an easy morning wellness routine check this out.

Take a cold shower after

As cold as you can get it. 3 minutes of ice cold water pouring onto your body to release cold shock proteins. Another great way to facilitate getting rid of free radicals in your body, boost immune system, reduce inflammation and increase energy.

After a sauna and cold shower, I’m not joking it feels like I had an energy drink. My mind is focused and calm and my body is ready to take on the day. I encourage you to try this routine in the morning and see what changes take place in your life.

I started doing cold showers/cold plunges last year during Livehard. When I do these regularly, I see major changes in energy, inflammation and mood.

I cannot tell you how much these have improved my life.
