Recently I’ve been on a journey to kick out toxic products from our home via food and other sources. Laundry detergent seemed like the first one that needed to go. DIY Laundry Detergent Powder is simple and only takes minutes!

Do you know how many toxic chemicals are in your detergent and how bad they are for you? I always knew it wasn’t healthy but passed it off as something I had to had and since there were only options with chemicals. I didn’t think about making my own.

The more you know…

When I started researching things that I could make from home to keep toxins out of our house the effects of laundry detergent came up along with solutions. Your skin is in contact with your clothes all day and I do not want my body exposed to that daily.

It’s insane to me the amount of chemicals and preservatives that are allowed even though they are known carcinogens. My days are now filled with trying to learn everything I can to get rid of as many toxins in our household that I can.

Here’s the reason fort the ingredients in DIY Laundry Detergent Powder:

Baking soda – It helps with sharper whites, brightening your colors and removing odor. What’s not to love with that?

Borax – This is your stain fighter. It’s typically readily available too. Why did I not know how simple it was to make laundry detergent?

Laundry Booster

(aka sodium carbonate or sodium ash) softens fabric and helps with stain removal.

Simply enough, these cheap ingredients are natural and are way safer for your family. And on the plus plus side of things, way more cost effective.

Now for the essential oils

These are totally not required but I love adding them for the freshness alone. Another way I love to use them is in an Epsom Salt Bath. My go tos are orange and lemon together. They bring such a bright sense feeling to the laundry and it’s an awakening that is nice when you are on your third load for the day. However, the sky is the limit for this. Try out different scents until you figure out what you like! I plan on trying something new every week. I won’t post it here until I know it smells good though.

Essential oils have become a great way to get non toxic fragrance in the house. Try them out on wool dryer balls as well!
