First..
Do you have a sourdough starter? You need this for your sourdough sandwich bread, so if not, check out my blog here about how to get one going. It only takes about a week to get it going so in a short time you will be on your way to making your own sandwich bread.
I’m so happy that I made my own sourdough starter instead of getting some discard from someone else. It really makes you learn the process and gets you into a rhythm for feeding and eventually baking. It took me a long time to start because it seemed so daunting. Now, I wish I would have started sooner because I can make awesome sourdough sandwich bread. If you are on the fence about it, JUST DO IT!

Getting in a Rhythm
Making your own sourdough sandwich bread takes time. Every family is different so everyones schedule is going to look a little different. I will lay out my exact schedule below. It took a little bit to get into the swing of things. If your sourdough starter is in the fridge make sure to take it out in the morning and feed it so you are ready to start mixing by the evening.
This sandwich bread takes an 8-10 hour bulk rise on the counter overnight. This is my typical schedule:
8:30 P.M. Mix starter, water, honey, oil and salt together with dough whisk. Then add the flour. Get everything incorporated. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
9 P.M. Take dough out and place onto floured surface, kneed for 5 minutes. Place back in bowl overnight.
6:30 A.M. Pull dough out, kneed 5-10 times to release air. Shape and place into loaf pan, let rise for 1-2 hours.
8:30 A.M. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.
Getting started with Sourdough Sandwich Bread
Getting started with your sourdough sandwich bread is the hardest part. That schedule may look challenging, especially if you are a mom or have a busy career but once you figure out the timing that works for you, it’s worth it. I was worried when I started this that my family wouldn’t like it and want me to just buy bread from the store. Nothing is farther from the truth, they ask for it. We were actually out of bread last week and with that schedule I couldn’t have it made
This is what I use to kneed my dough on and its a mess/life saver!

Sourdough Sandwich Bread
Equipment
- 1 Loaf Pan
- 1 Tea Towel or any cloth to cover your bread
- 1 Dough Whisk (Optional)
- 1 Silicone Mat (Optional)
- 1 Bread Slicing Guide (Optional)
Ingredients
- 70 Grams Sourdough Starter
- 300 Grams Warm Water
- 1 Tbsp Local Raw Honey
- 500 Grams Organic Flour
- 10 Grams Olive Oil Extra Virgin
- 1 Tsp Sea Salt
- 1 Tbsp Butter (Optional, used after the bread is baked.)
Instructions
- First measure out starter in bowl.
- Mix warm water, honey, oil and salt together until completely dissolved.
- Then add flour. Mix roughly with dough whisk and finish mixing with your hands.
- Cover with warm damp cloth and let sit for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, uncover and need 5-10 times or until the dough comes nicely together and forms a ball. Place back in bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rest overnight for 8-10 hours.
- Once it has rested and risen, gently pull dough out and kneed it roughly forming a rectangle. This helps press air out of it.
- Place into an buttered loaf pan and let rest for 1-2 hours.
- Heat oven to 350 Degrees about 10 minutes before loaf is done rising.
- Once risen, place in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.
- Once nicely brown on top, allow it to cool for 20 minutes then take it out of the loaf pan and put it on a rack to finish cooling.
- At this time you can take a tablespoon of butter and rub it on top of the bread. It will melt and make the crust softer, plus add some flavor.
- Wait until completely cool to cut. (Typically an hour or two.)
I have never tried making sourdough bread before! But this post makes it seem very do-able. And I love it so much! I will have to try!
