Making bulk pancake mix is my go to for easy weekend breakfasts. I can make a large batch and pull it out and have breakfast ready in 5 minutes when I need it. This is the mason jar as a container. I also use these containers for my homemade laundry detergent.
You get to choose the quality of ingredients that you put in this mix which is important for me. I’ve learned that the more I can control the ingredients of what goes into my family‘s body. The better off they are. This is just one more thing that only takes a couple minutes to work together. It’s one less thing you have to buy from the store.
Over the last couple years, I started switching our family over to organic foods and ingredients. It’s made all the difference. Since switching over, I’ve been able to eat all these foods with my family instead of making a separate gluten-free batch that has saved me a lot of time and effort in the meals that I make.
This journey started as making sourdough sandwich bread for my family. If you look on the back of the ingredients in bread, there’s all sorts of preservatives to make it last on the shelf for a very long time. When you make it at home you can make it with five ingredients. I’ve made it with as little as three ingredients. I have tested out how few things I can put in the bread. it’ll still turn out like a regular loaf I’ve made it with literally just water sourdough starter, and organic flour and it came out.
Is Homemade Pancake Mix Cheaper Than Store-Bought?
Making your own pancake mix at home is surprisingly affordable — and very comparable to popular store brands like Krusteaz.
Based on average U.S. grocery prices, this bulk homemade mix costs about $5.50 total to make. That includes flour, sugar, milk powder, and leavening ingredients.
This recipe makes approximately 5 full batches of pancakes, or about 50–70 fluffy diner-style pancakes, depending on size.
That works out to:
- About $1.10 per batch
- Roughly $0.08–$0.11 per pancake
For comparison, a 5 lb box of store-bought pancake mix typically costs between $6–$8 and makes about 6–7 batches, or around $1.00–$1.30 per batch.
So while the savings per batch may be modest, the real benefit of homemade pancake mix is having a pantry staple ready whenever you need it — with simple ingredients and full control over flavor and sweetness.
