When I started my sourdough journey last August I didn’t actually realize how many ways I could use it. I started making bread to kicked out enriched wheat and be able to control what my family puts in their mouth. (At least as much as possible) I have started doing research on the MTHFR gene mutation and actually just took a genetic test, I’ll write more on that in the weeks to come.

Why make your own you ask?

Go in your pantry and look at your breadcrumb ingredients. If you have a basic standard brand you will see a list full of unnecessary ingredients that are terrible for you.

If you make them at home, they can be organic (or not, I just happen to be working on getting everything organic in our house.) There will also be WAY LESS ingredients. Less is more when it comes to food.

Sourdough Bread Crumbs

I only thought about this because I always had ends of the bread that were never eaten. On occasion, a piece of bread would be cut too big or too small and wasn’t salvageable. In comes bread crumbs to eliminate waste!

To make DIY sourdough breadcrumbs however you will need sourdough bread. If you haven’t started on this journey click this link to find out how to start your own starter!

Something to think about:

If you need an incentive to make your own look no further than in this picture right below.

That’s right 19 ingredients! I did not go after a specific brand here so I’m sure every different type carries a little bit. Pay attention if you have the MTHFR gene break because you will not be able to process the folic acid in this and will have consequences. Also “natural flavor” can mean up to 400 different things! It’s wild how much misinformation about our health is out there. Just remember, less is more when it comes to ingredients. d

Thankfully if you are making organic bread at home with only 3 ingredients, you can make your own and keep all the toxic crap out of your body!

Getting started

I really don’t use “real” measurements here but I will try and write a recipe down below. I take a sheet pan and place all my ends of the bread on it and place it in a 350 oven for around 20-30 minutes, checking on it often. It will depend on how dry the bread already is for baking time.

Then I crumble it up roughly into a food processor, pulverize until I like the size of the crumb. Then add your seasonings and place in a container. Its that simple!

These were so satisfying to make. I’m currently on 75 hard and staying away from gluten in general however my family is enjoying them on all sorts of things. Next up… DIY Organic Chicken Nuggets at home featuring these DIY breadcrumbs!
