I was craving it…

Just last night I was really craving coleslaw. It’s a weird time of year for that, I know. However, I had to have it. But… I was out of coleslaw dressing.

If you’ve been following along, I’ve been trying to make as much from home as possible. The fact that I didn’t have it was a sign to make my own. I hadn’t actually made coleslaw dressing before so I looked up the base for it. Just as I thought, it was mayonnaise.

AND you’re not going to believe this, but I was out of that too! Thankfully, I’ve been making my own mayonnaise for over a year now. I had the ingredients on hand so I whipped that up really quick. If your looking for a simple mayonnaise recipe check out my blog – better for you homemade mayonnaise!

I love creating new things

Once I had my base, I knew I would need an acid. I ended up on white wine vinegar. Mixed that together and then just threw in some things I thought would work well together. One ingredient I LOVE to use is dijon mustard. It just adds so much depth to a sauce. I also used a small amount of sour cream for some tang. For spices I used celery salt and onion powder.

I was feeling spicy last night though so I added… cayenne pepper! Now, this is not traditional in coleslaw dressing and if you leave it out it will certainly taste great. Changing it up really added something to it though! Cayenne pepper is not only spicy but it has a lot of great benefits too. The process of making coleslaw dressing

All you do is mix everything together and add the coleslaw dressing to your coleslaw mix. I just had store bought it but you can shred your cabbage and carrots at home if you like!

For the dressing I would make it an hour before you need it. That way it will have time to chill and get cold for the coleslaw. No one likes warm coleslaw.
