🥩 What Is Beef Bouillon?
Beef bouillon is a concentrated seasoning designed to create instant beef broth. It’s sold in cubes, granules, or powder form and dissolves in hot water to make a quick, flavorful cooking liquid. It takes less space than keeping jars of broth, so it can be especially helpful if you have a smaller pantry like me. It’s a great alternative to beef bouillon from the store. Instead of simmering bones and vegetables for hours, bouillon gives you that rich, savory depth in seconds.
Beef Bouillon vs. Beef Broth
These terms often get used interchangeably, but they’re not the same.
Beef broth
- A ready-to-use liquid
- Made by simmering beef, bones, and vegetables
- Sold in cartons or cans
Beef bouillon
- A concentrated seasoning
- Mixed with water to create broth
- Shelf-stable and long-lasting
Think of bouillon as the shortcut version of broth.
Why It’s So Convenient
Beef bouillon is popular because it:
- Takes up very little pantry space
- Stores for months
- Lets you make exactly as much broth as you need
- Adds quick flavor to soups, rice, gravies, and casseroles
Instead of opening a whole carton of broth, you can mix up one cup at a time.
One of my favorite things to use this in is adding a little to French Onion Soup. It adds so much if you add this in on top of beef broth.

Why Make It Homemade?
Store Bought Beef Bouillon can have anti-caking agents, high sodium levels, preservatives, additives and more. When it won’t be sitting on the shelf for years, you do not need any of these extra ingredients.
