I wasn’t sure how these would turn out. I was very skeptical that it would fluff like a marshmallow if you know what I mean. It did!! It was so cool to watch this whole process unfold.
This took about 20 minutes of “cooking” time and 1-2 hours to set up. If you plan accordingly you will be able to enjoy them in just a couple hours.
Is the texture right?
Yes! I brought these homemade marshmallows to my neighbors house just last weekend to have someone other than my kids test them for outside review. They said the texture was just like a marshmallow! It felt good to get someone else to validate what I was tasting. One neighbor did say they reminded her of pancakes because they are sweetened with maple syrup. I am going to try sweetening them with honey next, then vanilla beans. Then maybe just a plain simple syrup!
The kids of course enjoyed them just like any other marshmallow. It feels so good to swap out foods and treats for options that are homemade with less ingredients. The next thing I want to tackle is condiments. I can’t believe it but I have been making our own mayonnaise for a year now 😱 it’s blowing my mind! If you want to learn how to make your own Mayonnaise…
The ingredients are simple
Being able to hand pick the ingredients I use is very important to me. One of the reasons I was excited about trying to make these homemade marshmallows was that I could use beef gelatin in them.
Grass Fed Beef gelatin contains 8 grams of protein per Tbsp. in the one I linked, you can find them with up to 15 grams of protein! It also contains loads of amino acids that are great for your body. I want my kids to enjoy their childhood and not feel like they are missing out on having treats. Don’t get me wrong, they still do have some processed foods when we are out or at other peoples houses. I’m mainly trying to keep our house as clean as we can be with the ingredients.
The other ingredients are maple syrup, salt and water. That’s it! Regular marshmallows have 10! That is crazy. Plus one of them is a food coloring Blue 1, not good! These marshmallows turn out perfectly white and there is no reason to add any coloring or artificial flavorings to them.
What I also love about these is you can cut them to the size you want. So think about why you will be eating these homemade marshmallows, if it’s for s’mores, you can cut them into large squares! They will fit perfectly and be less messy for everyone. Win-win!
