Core Ingredients Explained (What Each One Does & Why It Matters)
Homemade natural lip balm uses just a few simple ingredients, butย each one plays a specific role. Understandingย why theyโre used makes it easier to customize texture, avoid common mistakes, and create a balm that actually works for your lips. If your lip balm feels gritty, hereโsย why lip balm turns grainy.
A. Wax: The Structure of Your Lip Balm
Wax gives lip balm its shape, firmness, and staying power. Without it, your balm would feel more like an oil or gloss.
What wax does:
- Solidifies the balm
- Creates a protective barrier on the lips
- Controls how firm or soft the final balm feels
Common natural wax options:
- Beeswax
- Most beginner-friendly
- Firm but smooth texture
- Slight natural honey scent
- Excellent moisture barrier
- Plant-Based Waxes (Candelilla, Carnauba)
- Vegan alternatives
- Harder than beeswax
- Require smaller amounts
- Can feel firmer if overused
How wax affects texture:
- More wax โ firmer balm
- Less wax โ softer, more glide
Guide note:ย Too much wax can make balm drag on the lips, while too little can cause melting in warm temperatures. These temperature fluctuations can cause some issues with texture. If you’re having any problems with it feeling grainy – check out this blog on how to fix it.
B. Oils: Slip, Absorption & Nourishment
Carrier oils make lip balm spreadable, conditioning, and comfortable to wear. They also deliver most of the nourishing benefits.
What oils do:
- Provide slip and glide
- Soften dry or chapped lips
- Affect how quickly balm absorbs
Popular carrier oils for lip balm:
- Sweet Almond Oil โ lightweight and gentle
- Jojoba Oil โ mimics skinโs natural oils
- Olive Oil โ deeply nourishing but heavier
- Avocado Oil โ rich and very moisturizing
- Coconut Oil โ semi-solid, adds firmness (can make lip balm waxy so use carefully if you choose this oil.)
Choosing the right oil:
- Lightweight oils โ smoother, less greasy feel
- Heavier oils โ richer, more protective balm
- Blends often perform better than single oils

C. Butters: Creaminess & Comfort
Butters give lip balm its creamy, cushiony feel and help prevent lips from feeling tight or dry.
What butters do:
- Add thickness without stiffness
- Improve comfort and wear time
- Enhance moisture retention
Common natural butters:
- Shea Butter
- Extremely moisturizing
- Best for dry or sensitive lips
- Can crystallize if not handled properly
- Cocoa Butter
- Firm and protective
- Adds stability
- Has a natural chocolate scent
- Mango Butter
- Lightweight and smooth
- Less greasy feel
- Very beginner-friendly
Butter balance matters:
- Too much butter โ soft or grainy texture
- Too little butter โ balm can feel stiff or waxy

D. Optional Add-Ins (Used Sparingly)
This keeps the guide helpful without overwhelming beginners.
- Essential Oils โ flavor and aroma (always diluted)
- Flavor Oils โ lip-safe flavoring without scent concerns
Guide note: More ingredients does not mean better balm. Simple formulas are often the most effective.
As a result, I can control the ingredients know that Iโm not putting any toxins on my skin or at least my lips. And itโs one more thing I can make it home. And then I also know that my daughter is not putting any toxins on her lips when her lips are chapped.
