If you like having a box cake mix on hand, you can make your own with simple pantry ingredients. This recipe is budget friendly, has fewer ingredients and is always ready in your pantry.

Why Make Your Own Cake Mix?

I choose to make my own cake mix because I can choose my own ingredients. That means if organic is in the budget I can use it. If that is something that matters to you, making mixes from scratch at home is much more cost effective. I couldn’t believe the way I could start saving money with these by shopping at Costco for bulk Organic Flour and Avocado oil.

I make quite a few pantry staples at home now. One of my other favorites is Bulk Pancake Mix.

Ingredients for Homemade Vanilla Cake Mix

There are only a few ingredients in the dry mix portion. I will lay them out for you below, you most likely already have them.

How to Turn the Mix Into a Cake

In a mixing bowl with the dry mix add 3 eggs, ¾ cup milk, ½ cup melted butter, ½ cup sour cream, 1½Tbsp of Vanilla Extract. Make sure you whisk until smooth. Pour into your greased and floured baking pan or cupcake liners.

Baking Times

For 9×13 – 350℉ for 35-40 minutes.

For cupcakes – 350℉ for 13-15 minutes

Having a cake mix ready to go in your pantry is such a game changer. I’ve noticed I feel much more prepared and can pull together a dessert in a pinch if I need it. It seems like there is always a class party or bake sale that I need something made last minute. If I have a ready to go cake mix sitting in my pantry, I always have something I can make quick!

To make dry mix:

  • Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container.

To make Cake Mix:

  • Use – 1 dry mix, 3 eggs, ¾ cup milk, ½ cup melted butter, ½ cup sour cream, 1½ Tbsp of Vanilla Extract.
