Country sausage gravy is a taste of the old days, when people weren’t afraid of calories. I have to say, it’s one of my favorite breakfasts if I’m splurging. There’s something about a soft fluffy sourdough biscuit with butter underneath a big ladle of country sausage gravy.

What do you need for Country Sausage Gravy?

You only need a couple of ingredients for Country Sausage Gravy made at home and you probably already have them either in your pantry or your refrigerator.

Here they are:

  • Butter
  • Flour
  • Sausage
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Pepper

See? There’s not much to it and I’m guessing you already have those things at home in your kitchen. If not, just add them to your weekly grocery list. Preplanning meals really helps out the mental load of cooking. Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking! But when I don’t have a plan for the week I’ve realized I get really overwhelmed. Preplanning has been something I’ve started to slowly implement and I’m liking it so far. Do you preplan your meals?

I have started making my sourdough biscuits in big batches, precutting and freezing them. It has been a game changer! Being able to pull them out to defrost without have to make a mess in the kitchen every time we as a family want them is so nice.

Country Sausage Gravy

Country Sausage Gravy is definitely not low calorie, but it is simple ingredients and that is just as important in my view. I would rather my family be eating less ingredients from food I make. Hearing that they like this better than going to a restaurant is one of the biggest compliments you can get as a wife and mom.

Instructions

  • Start by adding your ground sausage to your pan using your meat masher break it up and brown it.
  • Drain (optional) and set meat aside.
  • Add your butter to the frying pan over low – medium heat, melt.
  • Add your flour in and quickly mix together, it will get thick fast.
  • Slowly add in milk, about ½ cup at a time. Let it thicken and then add some more until you have the consistency you want (you can add less milk for thicker and more milk for thinner.
  • Add in salt, pepper, and browned meat. Stir and taste and adjust seasonings if you want more.
  • Serve over sourdough biscuits!

Notes

For the milk: You don’t actually have to measure this if you don’t want to, just slowly add the milk in so it doesn’t get too thin too quick otherwise you will have to wait a long time for it to thicken. I’ve made this mistake before and it’s not fun.
For the pepper: I do feel like fresh ground black pepper gives it a better flavor. If you don’t have it on hand, just use regular.
