Now, I have another recipe that uses natural sugar. Homemade marshmallows can be made with out regular sugar. However, you do get the maple flavor. I notice it, so I decided to make a recipe using just regular sugar to eliminate that flavor. You are still getting rid of the preservatives and dye, so I’m okay with it!

And yes, I did say dye. Store bought Marshmallows actually have dye in them which is absolutely not needed and once you make these homemade vanilla marshmallows you will see why. I use a 9×13 pan to make these. It makes a lot! You can cut them as small or as big as you want them. I love making big squares to fit perfectly in a mug of hot chocolate while enjoying some peppermint bark.

The plan this year

Being able to make your own homemade vanilla marshmallows will bring so much joy! This year I plan on making these over and over. If you really want to go extra make your own vanilla extract! I’m going to even package them up and give them as gifts to add a little cheer for everyone’s Christmas. Next on my list to make is homemade hot cocoa mix. I have made chocolate syrup however, it does need refrigeration. I want Hot Cocoa Powder in my pantry dry so it is shelf stable. My family loves Hot Cocoa and Hot Toddy’s so I want to have it ready for this Holiday season.

Instructions

  • Add Gelatin to 1/2 cup of water and put aside.
  • Put sugar and remaining water in sauce pan and bring to a lightly boil for 6 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, add vanilla and salt. Stir.
  • Pour the mixture into the gelatin slowly and whip on low for 1 minute to get everything incorporated.
  • Then whip on high for 7-10 minutes. Trust the process, it really does take that long to get it to what it should look like. (It should turn white and be the texture of marshmallow fluff.)
  • Spread onto your parchment paper in your 9×13 and let cool 2-4 hours.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cut to desired size and enjoy!
