Ever since I started making sourdough bread, Sourdough French Toast has been requested every weekend now!

My son especially likes it. He calls it “Toast French” and I hope he never stops. 🥺 Weekend breakfasts are my favorite. It always brings back so many memories of my mom making waffles. I swear some things just taste better at moms house.

Where did Sourdough French Toast originate from?

Interestingly enough, this dish did not start in France. It actually started in Rome with the first known recorded recipe in 300 A.D. Isn’t that crazy? The French even called it “Roman Bread” for centuries. It is believed that it was the Roman author Apicius that put it in his cookbook titled, “Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome.” I would love to see some of those other ancient recipes!

What you need:

Everything to make Sourdough French Toast will already be in a standard American kitchen. A spatula, pan, bowl and plate plus your ingredients. This recipe is simple but absolutely delicious. Don’t underestimate how much flavor the sourdough adds to this recipe.

To start, you do need sourdough bread for this recipe. If you are interested in making your own check out these blogs I wrote on how to make your starter and how to make your own sourdough sandwich bread.

I hope you decide to make your own! Once you have that and a few other ingredients you are ready to go.

Making it from Scratch

French Toast Mixture

I started making as much as I can from scratch so I knew exactly what I was putting into my children’s bodies. When you buy ingredients from the store, products can sit on shelves for a long time. Companies add preservatives into their products so they do not go bad as quickly. It’s good for them, but not for you. There are all sorts of hidden ingredients in our food that we just were not meant to eat.

French Toast Mixture

Another benefit of making it all from scratch is getting your kids involved. My kids love helping crack the eggs and stirring the batter. They are even getting to the point that they can help getting it into the pan.

This recipe will make 6 pieces. You can adjust this recipe easily for more or less and you will still get a great result. Once you do it once, you will have the hang of it.

Once they are in the pan I always add extra cinnamon sugar on top of both sides. It gives it a nice color and a deeper flavor. Feel free to measure with your heart on this one. ❤️ Right about now is when the house will start smelling amazing and everyones mouths will be drooling ready for the final result.

Look at that color! All you need is maple syrup or some dashes of powdered sugar. (My family prefers maple syrup.) This dish is also great with any variety of berries which is one of my favorite things to add to elevate this dish.
